Ring final circuits,

A ring final circuit has two paths from the protective device to its loads. Its design and verification depend on the continuity and arrangement of the actual circuit.

What a proper assessment needs

Before this topic can be assessed for a real installation, the person responsible for the design or verification needs to establish the relevant facts:

  • Complete circuit layout including every spur
  • Cable installation conditions and protective device
  • Distribution of loads around the ring
  • Continuity measurements for all conductors
  • Relevant fault protection and voltage-drop checks

Factors to consider

Two parallel cable paths cannot simply be treated as twice the capacity of one cable. Load position affects current distribution, and a broken conductor changes circuit behaviour. A total floor area or cable length cannot demonstrate that a ring is suitable.

Keep the evidence with the decision

Record the equipment, installation conditions and the source of the data used. Where a manufacturer supplies product-specific instructions or coordination data, the exact product matters. A generic example should not silently replace that information.
