Three-phase cable selection needs the load on each conductor, the cable arrangement and the installation conditions.

What a proper assessment needs

Before this topic can be assessed for a real installation, the person responsible for the design or verification needs to establish the relevant facts:

  • Line-to-line voltage and phase currents
  • Balance, power factor and harmonic content
  • Neutral loading and conductor arrangement
  • Installation method and cable data
  • Fault protection and voltage drop

Factors to consider

A balanced-load conversion is useful arithmetic, but it cannot represent an unbalanced installation or establish neutral requirements. Cable and protective-device selection require checks beyond total kilowatts.

Keep the evidence with the decision

Record the equipment, installation conditions and the source of the data used. Where a manufacturer supplies product-specific instructions or coordination data, the exact product matters. A generic example should not silently replace that information.
