Choose the correct RCD type and sensitivity for a circuit to BS 7671, with discrimination checking.
Choose the correct RCD type and sensitivity for a circuit to BS 7671, with discrimination checking.
The RCD type depends on the fault current the load can produce. Type AC suits general circuits; Type A is the minimum where electronics create pulsating DC (EV chargers, most modern appliances, PV AC side); Type B is needed where smooth DC is possible, such as VFDs and some EV/PV equipment. The sensitivity is 30 mA for personal protection, or 100/300 mA for fire protection and discrimination.
Where an upstream RCD exists, discrimination needs the upstream device to be time-delayed (S-type) and at least 3× the downstream sensitivity. The selector checks this for you.
